DevCon 2006 Presentation  Mac  Win    Advanced   Tip File    Version 7 v7
My Presentation from the 2006 Developer Conference
I gave two presentations at the 2006 Developer Conference but one was for a class so I can't post it. What I can post, however, is the calendar solution I created in my second session. I have included the actual file, which I created in a little over an hour from scratch, in addition to a more complete solution that I used as a guide for the session. I also include an article, an outline and the commercial version of the solution. So, if you are trying to create a calendar solution or to understand how to modify my commercial version of the calendar, this download will really help you.   (1,497k)

Parse Find  Mac  Win    Advanced   Tip File    Version 7 v7
Parse Find Criteria to Restore Found Sets
Demonstrates how to concatenate find criteria so that they can be restored by a user at a later time. This technique is superior to saving serial numbers as multi-keys, since it actually restores find criteria -- rather than the found set -- at that moment in time. This technique is completely dynamic -- new fields can be added without modifying the script.   (32k)

Portal Locking    Advanced   Quick Tip    Version 6 v6
First Record in a Portal Locks When Scrolling
The portal-locking behavior explained below has been eliminated in FileMaker 7 and later. However, if you still have FileMaker 6 or earlier, please read on. Filtered portals are all the rage these days. They enable you to offer an excellent interface by allowing users to filter the available choices via pop-up menus, radio buttons, text fields, etc. These fields are concatenated and can filter a portal so that it displays just the information the user needs. The user can then make a selection, and a script in that portal row will store that selection. The only problem is record locking. You might not realize that scrolling a portal locks the first record in the portal. The first record is like the glue in the relationship and FileMaker Pro locks it in order to scroll. So, if two users have the same first record in the portal, only one of them will be able to scroll. The other user will get a record locking error. There seem to be no decent solutions. You can use access privileges in the related file to prevent editing of records. This works great as long as you don't need to edit the related database. However, this is the case in most filtered portals: they are simply used for making selections.   (k)

Field Filters v7  Mac  Win    Intermediate   Tip File    Version 7 v7
Format Phone Fields and More
This technique has changed so dramatically since I originally published it 10 years ago that it doesnít even look the same. The result is the same, but the way you get there is much easier to understand. In addition, the auto-enter feature is used, so there is no need to trick the user with multiple fields. Phone, Social Security Number (SSN) and Credit Card examples are filtered in this example.   (23k)

Bar Charts v7  Mac  Win    Intermediate   Tip File    Version 7 v7
Create Bar Charts with No Graphics or Plug-Ins
This file was converted to FileMaker 7 and later. Other than that, it hasnít changed much since the original publication. I did choose to change the font to Verdana, since it works better cross-platform. However, I wanted to republish this technique so folks new to the .fp7 format don't forget about this valuable technique.   (22k)
